Chlorophyll meter principle

The SPAD-502Plus measures the relative amount of chlorophyll in the current leaf by measuring the absorption of leaves in two wavelength bands. The figure below shows the absorbance of the spectrum of chlorophyll in the two leaf samples.

It can be seen from the figure that chlorophyll has a peak absorption in the blue (400-500 nm) and red (600-700 nm) regions, but no absorption in the near-infrared region.

Using this absorption characteristic of chlorophyll, the SPAD-502Plus measures the absorption of leaves in the red and near-infrared regions. A SPAD value is calculated from the absorptivity of these two regions, which is a numerical representation of the parameters corresponding to the chlorophyll content in the leaves.

Testing the nutritional conditions of crops

The chlorophyll content in the leaves is related to the current nutritional status of the crop. As can be seen from the figure below, the chlorophyll content (indicated by the SPAD value) increases in proportion to the nitrogen content in the leaves (an important nutrient component). For a particular crop variety, the higher the SAPD index, the healthier this crop represents.
